The Denominator

Same deaths, two honest rankings. Whoever picks the divider picks the villain.

Wind turbines kill birds. So do cats, windows, cars — and lunch. Every side of that argument quotes a total, and a total is half a number. Switch between the German death tolls as they are quoted and the same tolls divided by how many of each thing there actually is, and watch the bars re-sort in front of you: glass drops from first place, and one wind turbine ends up killing fewer birds a year than one cat, one house, or one person who eats chicken three times a week. Nothing is disputed to get there — same figures, same sources, one division. Every bar carries its published range, and a switch strips out the farmed birds so you can see what that assumption was doing.

Solid bar = the low published estimate. Faint extension = the high one. Wind is the widest band on the chart: a factor of ten between its ends, and still the smallest number here.

At 250 g of meat a meal, and about 1.4 kg of meat per bird. Three a week is the setting the essay argues about; the German average lands near eight birds a year per resident all by itself.

Quoted as totals, wind is a rounding error: at the top of its range, about one death in ten thousand on this chart — a bar too thin to see. And the largest bar is not glass, not cats, not traffic. It is the 694 million birds Germany slaughters for the table each year, about two and a half times every other cause here combined.

Both views are honest. They answer different questions. A total answers how much harm is this doing to birds in aggregate. A rate answers how harmful is one of these objects. Neither answers the question conservation actually turns on — which population can absorb the loss — and that third denominator moves the ranking again, in both directions. Among red kites found dead in Saxony-Anhalt since 2000, turbine collisions are 45.6%of the identified causes, and Germany holds over half the world’s red kites. That figure carries the same flaw as every other one here, pointing the other way: turbines are searched underneath on a legal schedule, and road verges are not.

Denominators: 29,226 onshore turbines (end 2025), 20 million buildings with living space (Zensus 2022), 49.3 million cars (KBA), 15.9 million pet cats plus ~2 million feral, 694 million poultry slaughtered in 2024 (Destatis); red kite loss causes from Nicolai et al., Sachsen-Anhalt. A farmed broiler and a wild red kite are counted as one bird each here — a deliberate flattening, not a claim that the two deaths are equivalent, and the one the essay spends its last section taking apart.
